Italian L’Esercizio della Matita (The Pencil Exercise)

The Cut Builder is a 10-week trumpet game; practice the procedure designed to increase the range and endurance of the trumpet.

The Pencil Exercise
By Clint ‘Pops’ McLaughlin
Italian Translation: Andrea Tofanelli

The builder of the Embouchure is at (page 14) 10 week isometric exercise course that will give him more range than the trumpet and tons of endurance. It has no music.

The first subject is the basic and advanced pencil drill.
It has pictures showing exactly how to do it.
The advanced drill while using for over 40 years has never been written about in a book. It will seriously develop your range.

The next topic is how to reduce mouthpiece pressure.
I have discovered a very unique way to hold the horn that allows you to play normally but prevents you from being able to use excessive mouthpiece pressure.
This includes several pictures to show exactly how and why it works.

The last topic is about how some people get an open vent from how they take a breath.
Thousands of players breathe in a way that forces them to reset the embouchure after each breath. This hinders consistency.
Well in this case several pictures are worth 10,000 words.
Most people never notice this has happened until I show them. But the results from knowing how to stop it are priceless.

Trumpet Embouchure Exercises – Italian L’Esercizio della Matita

Embouchure Muscles For Trumpet: Tone, Endurance, & Control L’Esercizio della Matita — or the pencil exercise — had long been a tool used by trumpet teachers to help players develop the musculature surrounding their lips. This method emphasizes the need to stabilize the embouchure that fundamentally influences a musician’s ability to produce sound regularly.

With this method, players work on a simple yet effective muscle-building routine that can be done off the instrument.

Over the years, thousands of people have asked me how and what to practice when I only have about 30 minutes a day.

Is there a way to maintain your skills or even improve some of them?
Well now there is

It’s about working both hard and smart. Not wasting a single second of precious practice time. And most importantly, working every muscle and skill we need to play well.

This book does that.
30 minutes A day to better playing is all about working hard and smart.
9 unique trumpet music exercises that will work the mind, fingers, tongue skills, breathing, breath support, tongue arch, tongue whistling, flexibility, range…. In short, everything.

30 Minutes a Day to Better Trumpet Playing Ebook $12 (no shipping)

Just a quick note to review Clint McLaughlin’s (Pops) recent book, “30 Minutes a Day to Better Trumpet Playing.” It’s necessarily a fairly slim volume (30 minutes isn’t long!), but it covers a lot of ground in a short time. There’s a very compact warm-up, a tongue exercise, major/minor scales, lip flexibility, wide interval studies, compression/arching/whistling exercises, and the atonal study designed for target practice. There’s also specific instruction on how to approach the exercises, technically and physically. It’s a pretty grueling workout, even with rests inserted. I opted to use it every other day, and I feel like it covers a lot of bases I wouldn’t necessarily cover in a regular practice session.
(Anecdotally, my practice session sometimes consists of picking up the horn, warming up, and reading material or working through improv material… not very focused, in any sense. I’m just covering a lot of basics in an organized way.) There are “options” that extend beyond my comfortable range, and obvious flexibility to increase speed on various exercises, so I feel there’s room to grow.
There are also some good diagrams that talk about tongue vaulting and tongue whistling that I hadn’t seen before.
Anyway, you thought people might be interested.

Jeff Helgesen, Trumpet Jeff’s website. Lots of trumpet music and transcriptions.
Jeff played in the Ray Charles Orchestra (1987-1990) with much more and several recordings.

This book put it all together for me. I became a better, stronger player in a matter of days. I had really misunderstood the concept of the tongue arch, and now I know why I struggled for so long. I only get to go to the horn every other day (if I’m lucky – work for a living), but honestly, I’ve become so much more efficient that my range and endurance are VERY increased.
I went from a low G above high C in the practice room to a centered double high C, and an A that I can wail at the end of a gig. Everyone in the band hears the difference, and I get encouraging looks from each and every one of them. Easily the best thing I’ve ever done for my playing. Buy the book, if you need range or endurance. It’s cheap but worth more than you can afford.
BTW, Pops doesn’t even know me. I don’t work for him. Peace.

Gary Comingore

Clint… hello!
I received your book “30 Minutes…” and I have to tell you that at first I thought I had bought a bottle of snake oil! But, after reading the material, opening the mouthpiece in the horn and starting the routine, this book was good… very good! At the 20+ minute mark, I felt like I had a real workout on my hands. Your book will become part of my daily routine (concert day or not). Many of the examples can easily be modified or tweaked to make it all more interesting. Great work! Thanks.

Don

30 Min Trumpet Lessons – Improve Daily

Many trumpet players feel like they need to practice for hours at a time in order to actually improve. This being reality, regular progression often comes from specialized, regular sessions and not miles of repetitive grinding. If your trumpeter isn’t sure where to start when practicing, consider the following structured 30-minute plan that allows them to develop vital skills without taking over their schedule.

The Slice Builder is a 10-week trumpet playing exercise routine designed to increase your trumpet range and endurance.

The Pencil Exercise
By Clint ‘Pops’
McLaughlin

The first topic is the basic pencil drill and the advanced pencil drill.
Finally, pictures show exactly how to do it.
The advanced drill, while used for over 40 years, has never been written about in any book. It will seriously build your range.

The Pencil Drill (page 14) is the 10-week isometric drill course that will give you more trumpet range and endurance. It has NO music.

The next question is how to reduce pressure.
I’ve discovered a very unique way of holding the horn that allows you to play normally and look normal, but prevents you from using excessive pressure.
This includes several pictures to demonstrate exactly how and why it works.

The last issue is how some people get an open aperture from how they take a breath.
Thousands of players breathe in a way that forces them to readjust the embouchure after each breath. This hampers consistency. The well in this case, several frames, is worth more than 10,000 words. Most people never notice this has happened until I demonstrate it to them. But the results of knowing how to stop it are invaluable.

This has been known to almost change the lives of players.
